Q: I have a 56K modem. Why isn't my
download speed even close to 56K?
A: There could be several reasons--and
most of them aren't your ISP's fault.
First of all, static electricity caused by
radio signals, power lines, and other sources interfere with
most 56K modem signals, forcing them to fall back to 42-50Kbps.
56K modems also require a clean, straight
through telephone connection to the telephone company's central
office switching center. Phone company line amplifiers that
boost a telephone signal over a long distance, PBX switchboard
systems, and other phone equipment alter the phone signal and
force 56K modems to fall back to speeds of 33.6Kbps and lower...
Finally, the FCC doesn't allow 56K modems
to use the full range of signals that phone company equipment
can generate. They're concerned that it'll cause static
interference to other phone lines.
So, no 56K modem in the United States ever
connects at 56K. Most 56K modem users seem to connect at speeds
of 44-48Kbps. |

Virus Info for Win95/98
A virus is a small program that can attach
itself to other software, and replicate itself, spreading the
infection to any computer that uses the contaminated software.
Viruses can do various things, from making a system file keep
growing until you don't have any free space left, to making MS
Word unable to save, to even damaging your hard drive.
Viruses must either be run or opened (for
MSWord macro viruses only), just downloading the program cannot
spread or activate them. The programs listed here provide
scanning and cleaning for viruses. Some scanners sit in memory
and scan all incoming files, others watch your system for the
symptoms of viruses. Others offer "on demand" scanning, telling
you when and where to check files. New viruses are detected all
the time, so your best bet is to make sure that you update your
virus checkers on a regular basis.
Then again, some viruses are just hoaxes!

With the following changes to your DialUp
Networking, you should never have to adjust
them again. MFX is switching to
Server Assigned name server addresses.
This is an easy change! Most of the settings
are already ok in your machine, you just
need to observe them and make sure they are
the same as shown below.
Instructions for the correct settings for
Win95, Win98 and Windows 3.1, and MacIntosh
are below. If they appear to be too
intimidating, just call us and we'll help
you thru the changes. If you are connecting,
but having problems surfing or getting email,
then you have a problem with your DNS settings.
See the following intructions for adjusting the
DNS numbers and the mail server settings.
--------------------------------------------
Here's How:
--------------------------------------------
|
|

Right-click on the MFX Internet icon.
Click on Properties,
Make sure there is NO checkmark in
"Use country code and area code"
Click on the Server Type button
These boxes should have checkmarks:
Enable software compression
TCP/IP protocol
These boxes must not have checkmarks:

For Macintosh --
With the introduction of Macintosh System 7.5.3,
Apple Computer released a new networking architecture
known as Open Transport. If you are using 7.5.2 or
below (including System 7.1) you will likely be using
Classic networking. Those with System 7.5.3 and above
(including Mac OS 8 and OS8.5) may be using Open Transport.
The setup for your computer is different depending
on your software.
--------------------------------------------
For MacTCP* (Classic networking):
From the Control Panels folder,
open "MacTCP".
Click "More...".
Look under the "Domain Name Server Information"
section, in the bottom right of the dialog that
appears:
Under "Domain" enter a period(dot) only on each
of the top two lines.
Under "IP Address" enter these numbers (one
to a line):
207.5.128.9
Make sure that the first line is set to be the
"default."
Click the "OK" button,
Close the MacTCP control panel.
Restart if prompted before re-connecting
to the Internet.
--------------------------------------------
For TCP/IP (Open Transport networking):
From the Control Panels folder, open "TCP/IP".
In the "Name server address" area, choose:
Server assigned name server addresses
Close the TCP/IP control panel and
save the changes when prompted.
You do not need to restart.
--------------------------------------------
*We have found some instances where MacTCP
just will not authenticate for a dynamic IP address.
If you cannot login after making the above changes,
please call us for an updated Mac Setup!
Do not reinstall your system or the old Agate software!

FTP... stands for File Transfer Protocol
--------------------------------------------
A file transfer program is something you
might want to learn to use if you are downloading alot of files.
Many ftp transfers can be made using Netscape or Internet
Explorer, but some people like doing it the old-fashioned way.
Usually it's a little faster...
These instructions are for WsFTP...
- Open WsFTP and chose a destination
server. Most servers will permit an anonymous login, and they
usually require your email address as a password. So just
enter "anonymous" for the UserID and enter your email address
in the password field.
Note: If you are downloading files into your account's www
subdirectory for your own webpage, you will need to login
using your own account name and password.
- Press the Connect button. You should be
connected to the servers /ftp/pub subdirectory.
- Once you are connected, your computers
files will show in the left window, and the server you have
ftp'd into will be in the right window.
- You probably will only have authority
to down load files from their server.
- Highlight the file you desire, and
press the <--- arrow to download it to your computer.
That's the basics. There is a really good
help section built into the program. For more details, READ it!
You can get newer (and more powerful)
editions of WsFTP from www.tucows.com or www.shareware.com.

NewsGroup Setup --------------------------------------------
One major caveat here!
Warning, Parents Be Careful!
Pay attention if your children show an interest
using newgroups... here's why:
Newsgroups have little or nothing to do with the "news media"
that we are accustomed to seeing on television, radio or
newspapers.... While there are a few legitimate newsgroups,
there is an amazing amount of trash and pornography
in this area of the internet...
Newsgroups, generally speaking, are about groups of people
who have a common interest in a specific topic, like
computers, dogs, environmental concerns or politics...
It is basically a fancy email system that threads letters
together so that people can read thru them and share information.
Netscape, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, and WinVn
are all popular newsreaders. Look in each program's help
files for for specific information to setup for reading
newsgroups...
The MFX source for newsgroups is:
news.gwi.net
There are other newsgroup sources out there, but this is
a good place to start.
|
|
Each email program has a different setup,
but they all have a couple things in common:
The SMTP: (Outgoing) server must be set to:
mail.mfx.net
The POP3: (Incoming) server must be set to:
mail.mfx.net
Your new email address will be:
johndoe@mfx.net
It may seem obvious, but substitute your username
in place of johndoe...
|
|
WebPages --------------------------------------------
To install your webpage on our server,
1. Ftp to www.mfx.net using your userid and password.
2. Copy your webpage files to the www subdirectory.
3. Make sure the first page is named "index.html"
4. Your url will be "http://www.mfx.net/~johndoe"
It may seem obvious, but substitute your username
in place of johndoe...
